Overview
The Hydro Electric Project is being developed on a BOO basis devised as a storage scheme on the Bua River.
The scheme has two reservoirs to be created by constructing two earthen dams;
- the first is at Mphindapasi and will store 403 million m³ of water on the Bua River; et
- the second is on the Chimbwazi River, a tributary of the Bua River and this will store 33 Million m³ of water. This will store the water released after generation from the Mphindapasi reservoir and will generate power downstream.
The scheme also comprises of two power houses:
- the first one is in the Chimbwazi Valley submergence, and will generate 16 MW from the Mphindapasi reservoir releases by inter valley transfer from two vertical Francis type Turbine-Generators each having a capacity of 8 MW; et
- the second power house is located on the right bank of Bua River about 5km downstream of the Chimbwazi Dam, where water from the Chimbwazi reservoir will generate 25 MW of power from two vertical Francis type Turbine-Generators each having a capacity of 12.5 MW.
In total, the two powerhouses will generate up to 41 MW.
