Overview
African Compass International (ACI) Energy arm, one of the emerging Independent Power Producers (IPP) in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) projects at present in Africa include a 30MW Photovoltaic Array, 100MW Thermal and expanding to other accredited geographies through partnerships and joint ventures which including a Refinery with a +100MW Power Plant, 500-800MW Hydro, Wind and Bioenergy projects.
According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), coal, oil and gas together accounted for 81% of Africa’s total power generation in 2009, hydropower 16% and all other renewable sources like solar accounted for just 1%. In 2012, a United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Report said that Africa’s power sector needs to install an estimated 7,000MW of new generation capacity each year and warned that “unless stronger commitments and effective policy measures are taken to reverse current trends,” half the population of sub-Saharan Africa will be without electricity in 2030. ACI’s present portfolio of power generation projects such as the solar farm and others in the pipeline, are positioned to meet the new generation capacity deficit projected above through its renewable energy sources projects and others on the continent and beyond.
